Growing as fast as beans on a tree

Finally one of us has paused for breath to write a blog article again after a month hiatus by the looks of it.  Luckily Simon has redone the design a bit (ahhh!).   So what's new in Kopi land?

  • We've had some phenomenal growth in subscribers these past few months and a big thank you to everyone as a lot are referrals from existing members - we can't do this without you!
  • To cope with this, we've scaled up the boxing and packing side of the operation so now there are nearly 10 dedicated Kopi-ettes who pack the sought after Kopi box each month and in record time too.  Our job now is make sure the coffee arrives on time from our roaster!
  • We're very pleased to have an amazingly experienced marketeer join us as VP Marketing (Gordon Ellis-Brown) who used to be the senior VP for 20th Century Fox and Carephone Warehouse.  He's amazingly talented and coming up with all manner of new initiatives for us.
  • Mostly we've had our head down in preparing for a new funding round to do a big marketing push for the rest of this year..  This takes time but we have a good amount of funds committed now and eager to get it put to good use!

 What's coming up:

  •  A re-designed site with a lot more content and depth - including our new Kopi Academy (guides and advice)
  • Ability to call us or chat to us live online
  • International delivery and payment options
  • A brand new way of gifting which should make things even easier...

All in all - we live in exciting times eh.

Exclusive Launch: Single-Herd Milk Delivered Through Your Letterbox

It's one thing getting outstanding gourmet coffee each month from a single-estate or co-op around the world, but if you put bland and basic milk in it then you're not doing yourself any favours.

So, starting today, Kopi is launching our new product range:  "Single-Herd Milk delivered every month", with the key features that makes Kopi such a unique proposition:

  • Freshness - as soon as the cows are milked in the morning of that month, it is pasteurised and then put straight into our unique Kopi Milk boxes (which seal in the liquid and flavour) and then sent via Royal Mail that afternoon.  That's from udder to door in a day
  • Gourmet & Rare - the cows that make the Kopi Milk Box selection are from the finest stock (we check their birth certificates) and fed only on caffeine-infused grass on the best hills.  This gives the milk a unique flavour that supermarkets wouldn't pay extra for.  It's all done by hand too.
  • Discovery & Curation - vetted and approved by a panel of expert farmers each month; each single-herd is selected amongst 40 possibilities around the world to bring some amazing rare treats.  This first batch is from a hidden herd that many thought was lost from history - deep in the Vale of Glamorgan.  It was said that King Arthur and his knights used to drink from this herd and that the milk was so flowing that it "came-a-lot".

So there we have it - we're really excited and can't wait to show you...

What are Kopi Top-Up Bags?

We often get asked the question "If I want more of that month's coffee - can I buy some?" and it's a very good question.

Every month we buy the coffee a few weeks in advance (hence why you're billed a couple of weeks before you receive it) and sometimes over-order.  Mainly this is so we have a few spare bags for promotional activity or to offer as extras for people who want to buy more.   It's also a factor of the size of the sacks the green coffee beans come in (60kg sacks usually).

So depending on how many subscribers we have in a given month, the promotional activity we're doing and how much coffee we've bought and roasted - we do end up having a small % each month available to our subscribers and we call these "Top-Up Bags".  We price them on the lowest tier (£7 for 250g) as they are a 2nd or 3rd purchase on top of the normal subscription bag.  For the 100g Weekenders, we price top-up's at £4.

So right now we have the following top-up bag quantities available:

  • 10 Pre-Ground bags: December - Mexico Terruni Nayarita Reserva - www.kopi.co.uk/dec2011
  • 15 Whole Bean bags: January - Malawi Geisha AB Msese District - www.kopi.co.uk/jan2012
  • 1 Whole Bean bag: February - Papua New Guinea Sigri Plantation A - www.kopi.co.uk/feb2012

When they're gone - they're gone!

It's worth noting that we don't hold stock like a normal e-commerce business; that's not what Kopi is about.  Basically if you really like one of the month's coffees - buy a big bulk order as soon as you can :-)

Seal gate

When we started Kopi late last summer we were adamant that we wanted to provide both an exceptional product and customer service. It's something that we've stood by throughout our short life. I think we're succeeding on both fronts. But, we're not resting on our laurels and continue to review and analyse every aspect of the product and customer experience.

However, we've received a few tweets, emails and Facebook wall comments over the past week or so from members who have been less than completely satisfied with some aspects of our bag that we deliver the coffee in.

Let me first explain why we chose the bags we currently use.

Due to our size we are not currently in a position to custom make our own bags. That would be prohibitively expensive at this stage in the company's life. So, we've had to use what is commercially available in bulk. But, in choosing the bag we kept in mind the guiding principles we formed when we started Kopi. Namely, an exceptional product and customer service. As such there were a number of factors which led us to choosing the bag we have.

  1. We wanted a bag that could stand up - picture 1 above. There is nothing more frustrating that having a coffee bag that falls over spilling its contents when you're brewing a fresh cup.
  2. As there is such a short timescale between our coffee being roasted and sent out we needed a bag that had a one-way valve - picture 2 above. This is to ensure that the CO2 freshly roasted coffee beans emit can escape.
  3. We wanted a bag that was resealable - picture 3 above. We looked at bags that had sticky resealable strips but felt they weren't secure enough and too fiddly. Also, they tend to lose their 'stickiness' after a few opens and reseals.
  4. We wanted to deliver our coffee in foil. This keeps it at its absolute freshest. The enemies of fresh coffee are air and moisture. Foil, rather than paper, helps to shield the coffee from these two elements.

All these factors played an important part in our selection of the current bag.

However, it is point three that some of our members are having problems with.

During transportation from our packing warehouse to the member's letterbox the seal occasionally becomes clogged with coffee grounds, as we flatten the bags slightly to fit in the slimline box. As such, when they try to reseal the bag it pops open, exposing the coffee to one of its chief enemies - air. (This is only a problem with members receiving their coffee pre-ground)

There are a number of ways to overcome this. Wiping or brushing the seal to remove the grounds for example, or resealing from the edges of the bag inwards. We could seal the bags with their mechanical seal prior to the heat seal at the top of the bag. However, the seal is still prone to popping open whilst in the hands of Royal Mail.

What we're doing to combat this problem

  1. We're reviewing our bag choice to see if there is another bag design that ticks all the boxes outlined above and delivers the coffee in the best condition possible.

  2. If you have expressed on Facebook, Twitter or via email that you have experienced the specific problem outlined above we will be contacting you individually to discuss options to remedy the situation. If you have this issue then please do get in touch with us soon.

  3. I'm sure you can appreciate that dealing with the relatively long lead times of bag manufacture means that we won't be able to deliver a redesigned bag in the next month. Maybe not even the month after. But, we are very conscious that it is something we need to remedy.

I hope this helps to convey our thoughts on this matter. We thank you for your patience and invaluable feedback. After all, without it, it would be difficult to fulfill our original vision set out when we started Kopi.

Thank you for your continued support.

Infographic: The World of Coffee

Our first infographic of many showcasing the coffee producing areas around the world, some basic facts to coffee beans and roasting, and brewing tips for making a great cup of coffee.

It's under a creative commons license which means you can share it around and use it wherever you like as long as you don't change it in any way and credit Kopi.

Enjoy!
